I wish everyday could be Hallowe'en...almost.

Hello, I haven't updated in a while, because I've stuck to posts that are mainly shop-related. So this post will deviate somewhat from that.

October has come and gone. If you live in the South, as I do; real Autumns and Winters are rare. It is not quite cold enough for the proper monochromatic ensemble or overcast enough to spend more than an hour walking the outdoors. I was lucky enough to spend last year in much colder temperatures: rain, sleet, (no snow), but below freezing nights were enough to keep me from cursing this year too much.

So in lieu of the time originally planned for cold nights out, I stayed in with Chai brewing and my Pixie stitching. 2 costumes with enough time to make (my first) Fascinator this year; this Hallowe'en saw the most items made, from sketchbook to sewing table. With great results, especially my first millinery venture; a witch hat.

Another part I'm proud of is the low cost of the items made for this Hallowe'en, less than the cost of a house party pizza. Thank you Goodwill!

Early in October was another first-time project for me: bedding.

Inspired by a wonderfully comfortable square quilted blanket, black on one side, silver sheen on the other.

Here a quick detailed snapshot I took of the blanket, sorry for the flash.

Photobucket

It's a blanket only a monochromatically inclined futurist could love.
This blanket, unfortunately, stays in the bed; it's much too big for couch lounging.
So taking a cue from my space blanket and Ofelia (a favorite bedding collection from Ikea)

(reference photo)

Photobucket

It seemed necessary to put together Ofelia's fluffiness and the monochromatic, minimalist style of my quilt, plus it needed to be couch worthy.

So, after an entire day of sewing and a lot of gathering; I finished my first throw blanket.

Photobucket

The photo doesn't show both sides but the opposite is black and made from cotton. The ruffling is also on both sides, making it extra fluffy.
Although it was meant for the couch, on a few occasions it found its way into the bedroom; for extra warmth.

Both first time projects were fun, I don't plan to make more to sell. I like having personal projects once in a while.

In essence, October was very productive, I plan to do more next Autumn; sun or snow.
The next few posts I make should be Etsy listings, plan to see a few more dresses and a possible tutu-skirt.

New listing plus a sneak peak at personal project

This week I had another dive into the vintage storage room to find another velvet skirt which brings this newly available vintage gem:

BULE/GREEN, TURQUOISE, CRUSHED VELVET PANNE TIERED SKIRT VINTAGE DESTASH - FREE SHIPPING

Photobucket

This past week I started to work on a jewelry project strictly for myself, it was inspired by some amazing jewelry I saw on a website of a handmade jewelry shop based in California.
Of course I couldn't bring myself to spend upwards of $100 on one piece of jewelry, as beautiful as they are. Hence, my diy wheels started turning and yielded me quite an amazing piece:

Photobucket

Cost? Less than $20, plus it looks better (if I do say so myself) than the original inspiring pieces, for only seeing a few pictures of them.
There will be more pieces made, possibly a pair of earrings or a bracelet, we'll see...

----------------------------------
While writing this post, I thought I'd list down some recommended reading as well as books that I have not read, but plan on doing so.

Of course, I'm sure we all have read J.D. Salinger, so I'll spare you that.

I'm slowly starting to get into Neil Gaiman, even though I totally slacked on the 1 book 1 tweet thing this Summer, my trek through "American Gods" continues.

A while back I thought it a great idea to re-read "Tale of the Body Thief" by: Anne Rice and "Faust" concurrently, since there are so many references to that book, it seemed only logical to learn what it was they were saying. Bad idea.

A friend recommended "Idlewild" by: Nick Sagan, it was good. I never read the last chapter though. I guess I'm not really into sci-fi novels all that much.

I received "Just Kids" by: Patti Smith a few months ago as a gift. I'm still in the first reading of it, so far I see it as a wonderfully detailed recounting of her life, fond memories, lessons, and evolution along side the incredible Robert Mapplethorpe, my favourite photographer.

If you're into overly dramatic personas and undertones intensely ebon with gothic-like romance and infatuation, then "Dolis" by: Maki Kusumoto would be a good manga/graphic novel for you. The illustrations are riddled with dark 80's influence and a touch of androgynous lust. It was given to me for Christmas and now my obsession with the artwork of Maki Kusumoto has increased 10-fold. A favorite of mine.

If you're in school, find: "Flowers for Algernon" by: Daniel Keyes; it will pull on your heart strings and spark your curiosity for what's to come in adult life. While making you appreciate the ability to feel, think; and push you to go beyond your comforting surroundings in life.

After a few lucky trips to Goodwill and Half-Priced Books I've acquired:

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by: Oscar Wilde
"Three Stories and a Reflection" by: Patrick Süskind (yes I plan on reading "Perfume" and halfway through "The Pigeon")
and
"Neverwhere" by: Neil Gaiman

These I plan on reading in the near future.

Recommend something to me.

Remembrances of Samhain Treasury

Here are some awesome items I found while browsing through Etsy, I had so many of them saved as favorites that I went ahead and piled them onto a treasury.

As a collective, these items remind me of Halloween. Such fond memories go through my mind, especially during this time, when I wish Autumn was already here.

A Suprising Find in the Attic or A Look At Vintage Patterns

Earlier this week I ventured into my parent's attic, hoping to find more vintage items to put up for sale. As I did this, I found a box of patterns...lots of patterns.
While looking through this box, I noticed some that were enclosed in a plastic pack, they looked old and torn.
I check out the pattern only to find that it was one of my grandmother's patterns she used back in the fifties, even the pattern was a classic 50's design. I was amazed!
Photobucket

Of course, I had to be sure of what it was.
It is a McCall's pattern number 4971 from 1959.
Photobucket

The pattern was quite tattered, most of the envelope had disintegrated, but the actual pattern pieces were still usable. Of course I would never use this pattern, it is best left alone. I'm sure it made many a beautiful dress, especially if it was my grandmother's hands sewing it together.
Photobucket

There is even a name written on the front of the envelope, no doubt my grandmother naming who the finished dress was meant for. She made so many clothes for her family and friends, and still does!

One thing I HAD to do was open up the instruction leaflet, it was in extremely good condition, no tears or tattered pieces save for the ones on the folds, it wasn't even rigid from oxidation.
So I checked out the pattern layout and was surprised that the pattern pieces were relatively simple for such a popular style of dress.
Photobucket

There were more patterns I found of similar design, a lovely Vogue pattern then another in a Jacqueline Kennedy-esque style.
After looking at the McCall's pattern, I didn't want to open up any others.
Photobucket

Seeing this pretty much brought me back to the time my grandmother taught me how to hand sew, I was not aware back then that I would use these skills and put them to projects and designs of my own at this age.
I'm so grateful for that. Sewing is what my grandmother loves to do, there are still many more patterns that she has, some have been given to my mother, there is one box...but that isn't even scratching the surface of the amount of patterns my grandmother really has.
