How to make a chain-harness

Of course there are many chain-harness tutorials out there. Those I have seen are just the same, simple design that can be easily found in stores.

This tutorial has a bit of a naughty side, as this design is inspired from a pattern seen in bondage rope.

front of harness

I won't tell you what chain to purchase, that is to your taste. I would have used a matte, gunmetal chain but all I had was a shiny, silver colour curb chain from a multi-strand necklace that I took apart. Whichever chain you choose, make sure your jump rings will fit through the chain links, some jump rings are thicker than others so make sure your chain links will be compatible.

(I am a size petite-small, so if you need it a bit longer or wide, just measure out your torso and chest to adjust accordingly, as this is the main area where the chain wraps around.)

Below, I have a "pattern" for this harness tutorial, I call it a little "cheat sheet" this will accompany the written instructions.
The colours in parenthesis next to each item correlates to the pattern.

*If the photos are too small, click on them, they will open up in flickr where you can view a bigger size*

chain harness tutorial pattern

---
Ingredients:
Chain - up to 12.5 feet of chain. (red)
Chain Pieces:
2 lengths of chain 18" long [bottom third side rib chain]
2 lengths of chain 13" long [neck chain]
4 lengths of chain 13.5" long [top two side rib chain]
2 lengths of chain 11.5" long [chest chain]
1 length of chain 8" long [back chain]
1 length of chain 3" long [front bottom chain]

Jump Rings:
4 rings 10mm in size (blue)
2 rings 7mm in size (brown)
2 rings 6mm in size (yellow)
4 rings 4mm in size (green)

Headpins - up to 3 headpins 52mm long (blue figure 8)

Lobster Clasp - 1 (purple)

Rosary Pliers
Flat-nose Jewelry Pliers
A thick or heavy sweater on a plastic hanger or a body form
Table or flat work surface
Towel or soft surface to lay over work space or under "model"
---
This harness can be easily put on and taken off, there is a minimal pattern on the back of the harness to allow such convenience.

You will need to set up your work area. Hang up the sweater for your "model" to build the harness on, or a body form as well as prepare your table workspace with a cloth or thick soft surface (this prevents any ring or piece of chain to bounce off your table if you so happen to drop one by accident while working--it will happen)for the beginning steps of the harness construction.

Also, prepare your chain and jump rings, it is best to open all your jump rings, have your chain lengths measured out, "cut out", and ready to attach. Have your headpins wrapped and formed prior to building your harness, this allows your work to go by smoothly without having to stop everything to open a ring.

As you may have noticed, I am using headpins. These are for wrapping them into figure-8 jump rings. The flat heads are cut off and the pin is wrapped to a figure-8 shape with a width between 5-10mm (whichever you can manage)
It will look something like this, the photo shows it in an open state. In reality, the figure-8 jump rings I made are far from perfect.

figure-8 jump ring

---

There is a lot going on in the visual pattern, so we'll start at the top of the Front.
---
First, get the two lengths of Neck Chain that is 13" and attach one end of each chain to a figure-8 jump ring.

Second, attach the two lengths of Chest Chain that is 11.5", to the figure-8 jump ring that already has the Neck Chain.

Third, measure two intervals of 4" from the top of each Chest Chain, this is where the other two figure-8 jump rings will be placed, place each side of the figure-8 jump rings into the 4" placement of each Chest Chain. The rest of the bottom chain, should be 3.5" on each chain.

Fourth, measure two intervals of 2" from the top of each Chest Chain, this is where the Top Two Rib Chains that are 13.5" will be placed, attach each Top Two Side Rib Chains into the 2" placement of each Chest Chain with a 4mm jump ring.

Fifth, attach a 10mm jump ring into the bottom of each Chest Chain, between these two 10mm jump rings, attach each end of the Front Bottom Chain that is 3" long, to the 10mm jump rings. To the same 10mm jump rings, attach one end of the two Bottom Third Side Rib Chain that is 18" long.

[*This completes the Front portion of the harness.*]

front of harness (detail)

---
(With the Back portion of the harness pattern, Neck Chain, the four Top Two Side Rib Chains, and the two Bottom Third Side Rib Chain are shown as a continuation in the Back portion of the harness pattern)

Back portion of the pattern, at the top.

Sixth, attach the two ends of the two pieces of Neck Chain (that is not attached to the figure-8 jump ring) to a 10mm jump ring. To that jump ring, attach the Back Chain that is 8" long. To the bottom of the Back Chain, attach a 10mm jump ring.

Seventh, gather, from one side each, all the Rib Chains, and link the ends of each Rib Chain, in correlating order of top-middle-bottom to a 7mm jump ring. To only one of the 7mm jump rings that has all Rib Chains, attach a chain of jump rings as follows: 6mm jump ring-to-6mm jump ring. Attach the bottom 6mm jump ring from that chain and attach to the 10mm jump ring that is already attached to the bottom of the Back Chain.

Finally, of the gathered Rib Chains on the opposite side, attach to the 7mm jump ring that has the Rib Chains, a Lobster Clasp. The Lobster clasp will clasp onto the 10mm jump ring that is attached to the bottom of the Back Chain.

back of harness (detail)

Now you have a cute and naughty chain harness you made on your own! Yay!

not completely personal

Hello.

I'm not very active on here. There are a few reasons for this, which I'm not ready to disclose yet. What I will say is there are a few new items available that I did not for some reason post here, so this will be a non-personal/personal post.

Gothic Lolita Up-cycled Vintage Mini High-Waist Tutu Dress

Gothic Lolita Up-cycled Vintage Tutu Dress With Pink Bodice

Hello again!

So for a few weeks now I've sketched more than I usually do, my book is almost empty of clean space. Each sketch is for a whole new accessory line that will be mainly for brick-and-mortar shops in and around S.A.
Some years ago I had an online shop of nothing but accessories, it was fun and was what got me started in public sales of my handmade wares. Now it seems all I do is clothes, which is not bad but taking another crack at accessories seems to be the right thing to do. Don't worry, the clothes aren't going anywhere, just less clothes will be popping up in my online store for a short while.
Plus, I've been working with another creative project that is still in the beginning stages, but when it is ready you will get to read all my manic posts about it.

Also, I want to mention that I've been obsessing over Tumblr. Of course being a photo-nerd I could only hold off from Tumblr for so long.
There are two accounts I post on
SeptemberCarolan.tumblr.com
a place for me to post photos that inspire me as well as photos of my own.
and
Fu** You Is The New Black
all black & white photos, all style and attitude.

Of course I will still blog here, so follow, share, send me photos.
In the meantime join me on facebook

September Carolan items now at Secret Oktober

Hello.

Wow, I have not updated in a while, so much has gone on in the past month or so.
First off, if you are in the Austin, TX area you will find a small selection of September Carolan items now at Secret Oktober

They are selling fast so hurry before they are gone!

Also, there are a few new items going up on my etsy shop, I can't really say when because my supplies diminish fast and I want to list many at once.

A few posts back I had mentioned a swimsuit tutorial, well after doing much research, I found there are quite a few swimsuit tutorials already out there. One I found in particular (that I totally forgot about until after I made my own swimsuit) was one from the late-great online podcast "Threadbanger".
They show you how to make a vintage inspired swimsuit out of a polo shirt:

Even though I didn't do a tutorial, I still want to post one, what it will be on, that has yet to be determined.

I started this post early in the day then the rest of the day happened so once I got back to finishing this post it was after 10pm, so I'm going to rest my migraine head...no Excedrin this time.

from gastric hell

For over a year now I've attempted an all fresh diet. Even forcing some to keep their crisper stock with fruits and veggies that are in season (cheap). That course has been lost for more reasons than I care to disclose.
I at least have some delectable recipes in memory and left behind the fear of trying new foods. So often now I can grab whatever I find in the fridge and make something visually pleasing and edible.

The main rule I keep in mind is: if there is a dish out there combining those ingredients, try it.

spinach, mushrooms, egg, toast
Brunch made of spinach, green onions, mushrooms, one egg, and toast

Of course it's not a hard concept to grasp, most cook like this anyway; so preparing fresh meals isn't a forced habit. If only I documented the gastric hell I used to live in, my sentiment would be clearer.

On another note, I've only more sewing to do than there appears to be in the shop. Making the decision to work on a tutorial rather than re-list an item was tough, but I have not written a tutorial since the "Pleats to Gathers tutorial" and I like to write up tutorials of tips that are seldom shared. When it comes to sewing, the internet is quite redundant, it's easy to get lost in all the clutter. This should yield a swimsuit tutorial; whether it's a one-piece or two, that's yet to be determined.

caffeinated vampire

Hi. Can't sleep, must make random post.

Every so often, my usual day-to-day routine becomes rudely interrupted by a migraine. I like to call it, a complete waste of time. So when I swallow down an Excedrin, the caffeine (which I'm sure is not essential in migraine eradication) keeps me awake when I need to sleep...not after I take the medicine, but at an ungodly hour once I have slept for half a night. See the post time is quite evident, I'm living the life of an internet gamer or some sort of person who spends most of the night awake (vampire)

I can assure you the post is unique in it's time. I could be finishing J.G. Ballard's "Crash"; which I highly recommend to those comfortable with things that make you uncomfortable. Best way I can describe that.

My intentions of writing this post is to quickly show you Fiesta. Yup.

Where I live, there is something celebrated around the start of Spring called "Fiesta". It lasts about a week or so and it is filled with many cultural related things and drinking. While I don't partake in the latter, I don't really go to any Fiesta related things; so deciding this year to break that "sheltered life" cycle I attempted to find any Fiesta event that would be worth while and not crowded.
So during the final weekend of "Fiesta" my friends and I decided to go to the "King William Fair" in Southtown.

Many years ago, my mom and I used to live near Southtown. Not to be rude to my city, but Southtown is generally the most undesirable place to live. During my time there, I was a sophomore in high school. Near the high school, merely blocks away, is King William street, which is the main part of the King William district. I used to walk there after school just to go by King William street and walk by the river. It is lovely and was an escape from the florescence of broken gravel, streets of spray painted abandonment, and everything else that didn't look as serene as that river.

So the KW fair seemed appropriate; to visit my old favorite hideout and finally share it with some friends.

King William st river walkway
When we arrived, this was pretty much worth all the trouble. This is best during the somber Winter of grey clouds drifting above an icy breeze.
Nostalgia ensues.

King William st river walkway
It's excitement and ease, to walk this often empty path. Not enough people appreciate it, even those who own a lovely house that lines the river bank.

Which is not like the others
But we had to walk through the fair, it was pleasant; we couldn't bring ourselves to match the hideous wares that are custom during "Fiesta".

The day brought tolerable weather and with my insistence on less sun, I basked in it for one day, just one. I've not the pallor, but my persistent "tan" is not from the sun, I can assure you.

Maybe I'll pry myself away from my sewing machine and walk through the King William district again soon. Winter cannot come soon enough.

mush

Hello!

So tired to-day, it was like I woke up the day before and ran around like Ms. Pacman gobbling up morsels of goodness while pocketing eggs that plastic hens left behind.
Oh wait, that did happen the day before, except for the last part.

I spent most of the morning under curls and hot Chai; recovering. It then occurred to me how badly outdated and dark this blog has turned out to be. With confused, yet, desperate efforts, I spent a good 30 minutes trying to tweak and prod blogger's *useful* tools to no avail. Then, I finally settled on an old blog layout; the internet's many outdated features can still look ok.

At first where my body was fatigued now it's almost to the point of atrophy. My neural muscles have been overworked without first having any decent rest, mush is the best word to describe it.
I think sewing can wait; to-day, I need balance and some green tea.
